What is menopause and how does it affect us? Learn more about menopause from Margareta Serfozo, Integrative Nutrition Health Coach & Functional Medicine Practitioner.

Menopause awareness is essential for supporting women and breaking the stigma surrounding this natural transition. Despite being a universal experience, it is often under-discussed, leaving many of us unprepared for the physical and emotional changes it brings. Scientific evidence shows that increased education and awareness greatly enhance our ability to manage menopausal symptoms effectively. In this article, we will explore key aspects of menopause and discuss why raising awareness is so important.

Menopause awareness

What is menopause?

Menopause is the permanent end of menstruation, diagnosed after 12 months without a period due to reduced ovarian hormone production, usually between ages 45 and 55. The main symptoms of menopause could include hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, sleep disturbances, and vaginal dryness. Mood changes, anxiety and depression are also common, often due to hormonal fluctuations. Long-term risks may include bone density loss and cardiovascular disease. Due to the wide range of health issues and risks associated with menopause, it is crucial that we have awareness of this transition to make informed choices about how to better manage potential symptoms and protect our health.

Awareness matters

Menopause awareness is crucial as it reduces stigma, provides accurate information, and ensures women receive proper care. Educating women about treatment options, including lifestyle and dietary changes, movement, cognitive behavioural therapy and hormone replacement therapy, empowers them to manage symptoms with the help of qualified professionals. Research highlights barriers to seeking help, such as lack of awareness, stigma, and the belief that menopause is simply part of aging. Improved healthcare professional education and culturally appropriate resources are essential for better support. Data shows that informed women are more likely to seek appropriate care, improving their quality of life. Ultimately, menopause awareness empowers women to manage their symptoms confidently and access the care they need.

Menopause at work

Awareness also supports mental health and workplace environments. Research shows 23% of women have considered quitting due to menopause or menstrual symptoms at work, with 14% planning to leave. These symptoms impact mood (55%), concentration (52%), and physical comfort (46%), reducing productivity for 40% of women. Educating employers and promoting flexible policies can reduce stress and improve productivity for menopausal women. By promoting awareness, we empower women to manage their symptoms confidently and ensure they have access to the care they need.

In conclusion, menopause awareness is about creating a supportive environment where women can feel informed, validated, and empowered during this significant life transition. By fostering conversations, breaking down taboos, and providing resources, we can ensure women’s wellbeing throughout menopause and beyond.
