Darlings, lashes make a legend! For every different type of eyelash, there’s a mascara that can make them look bigger, thicker, longer, darker, and more dramatic! Everyone’s eyelashes are different – some people have naturally long or curly lashes whereas others may have short, straight, or sparse lashes – but whatever your lash type, you can use the magic of mascara to enhance and beautify the look of your eyes.

Discover which type of lashes you have, then learn easy tips and tricks on how to transform the look of your lashes with mascara!

What are the different types of eyelashes?

What are the different types of eyelashes

  1. Long eyelashes with a fluttery, wispy look

    LONG LASHES

Do you often get compliments on how fluttery your eyelashes look? If you do, it’s likely that you have long eyelashes. Eyelashes that are naturally long have a gorgeous butterfly-like quality that draws attention to your eyes.

My best mascara for natural long lashes:

When lashes are naturally long, there is no need to apply a lengthening mascara. Instead, focus on adding volume with a volumising mascara to make lashes appear bigger and thicker. My Exagger-Eyes Volume Mascara will give long lashes 9x the volume in one application, emphasising their natural length while adding head-turning volume.

  2. Short eyelashes with a dainty understated look

    SHORT LASHES

If your lashes look barely-there without a slick of mascara, you may have short lashes. Short lashes are generally less fanned out than longer lashes and often have a pointier appearance as the shorter a lash, the more difficult it is to hold a curl.

My best mascara for short lashes:

Your lashes may be less noticeable if they are on the shorter side, but mascara can add wow-factor to even the shortest lashes. I recommend applying a lengthening mascara to short lashes in order to lift and stretch each hair for a fuller, longer appearance. Try Pillow Talk Push Up Lashes! to give short lashes a lift-and-stretch, push-up effect!

Tilbury Tip: Short can be chic, darlings! You can always use eyeshadow and eyeliner to create the illusion of a more dimensional lash line.

  3. Curly eyelashes with an accentuated bouncy curl

    CURLY LASHES

Some lashes have a natural curl which causes them to flick upwards. Curly lashes look naturally lifted which gives them a bright-eyed quality that helps eyes to look more open and awake. If you have curly lashes, you probably don’t even need to use a lash curler!

My best mascara for curly lashes:

Since curly lashes have a natural kink, they can end up overlapping and lacking separation. I recommend using a mascara like Pillow Talk Push Up Lashes! that will help to separate each lash for the most fanned-out appearance without compromising on curl.

  4. Straight eyelashes that point outwards without curling

    STRAIGHT LASHES

If your lashes don’t have a natural curl, it’s likely that you have straight lashes. Straight lashes have a spiky appearance and often stick straight out rather than lifting and fanning out. They can be long or short and are recognisable for their distinct lack of curl.

My best mascara for straight lashes:

A curling mascara is the secret to making straight lashes look curly and lifted. My Exagger-Eyes Volume Mascara will work wonders for straight lashes – it has a 2x curling effect even without using an eyelash curler!

  5. Full eyelashes with a voluminous, fanned-out look

    FULL LASHES

Have you ever been asked if you’re wearing false eyelashes when you have no makeup on? Full lashes are blessed with the length and volume that people achieve with false lashes and lash extensions. When lashes are naturally full, the lash line is dense with long, thick hairs that could easily be mistaken for wearing mascara.

How to get natural full lashes:

There isn’t much work to be done when your lashes are naturally full, darlings. I suggest applying a coat or two of my Legendary Lashes Vol 2 mascara to give your lashes a volumising, vinyl coating with a Hollywood flutter!

  6. Sparse eyelashes with gaps along the lash line

    SPARSE LASHES

If your lashes are fine hairs and you can see gaps in between hair growth, this is known as having sparse lashes. Lashes can be sparse in patches or all over and the hairs that are present are generally short and thin. Sparse lashes are common for mature eyes as lashes are prone to thinning and falling out over time.

My best mascara for sparse lashes:

Instead of using a lengthening or volumising mascara to amplify the appearance of sparse lashes, I prefer to use a buildable formula that I can apply in layers to steadily enhance their appearance. My Full Fat Lashes! mascara is designed to give lashes greater definition and has a gorgeous, glossy finish that adds allure to sparse lashes.

Tilbury Tip: If there are noticeable gaps between your lashes, use an eyeshadow or eyeliner to shade in any vacant spaces to create the illusion of a thicker, fuller lash line. You could even use a liquid eyeliner like The Feline Flick to sketch out fine hair strokes that mimic the look of real lashes.

  7. Thick eyelashes with a dramatic, voluminous look

    THICK LASHES

People with naturally thick hair will often have thicker eyelashes. Thick lashes have denser hair follicles which gives them dramatic, natural volume. They look more prominent on the face – even before mascara – and give the lash line a more dimensional look.

How to get natural thick lashes:

Thick lashes have natural volume, so I like to use a lift-effect mascara to give them a pushed-up appearance. My Pillow Talk Push Up Lashes! mascara gives lashes a 24-hour vertical lift effect; comb it onto thick lashes and they will appear instantly more lifted and separated.

  8. Thin eyelashes with a delicate, wispy appearance

    THIN LASHES

While thick lashes are naturally voluminous, thin lashes are fine and delicate. Thin lashes have a wispier appearance and are more understated – they aren’t the first thing you’ll notice about someone’s face. They can be long or short, but due to their subtlety, they can appear barely there from some angles.

My best mascara for thin lashes:

If you have thin lashes, I suggest using a volumising mascara to help dial up their appearance. Using a volume mascara like Exagger-Eyes Volume Mascara will help to emphasise and exaggerate the appearance of each individual lash, building drama and density to unlock your dream lash look.
