Getting festival ready: Tips for your wellbeing

Discover top tips for your wellbeing to be festival ready this season by Margareta Serfozo, Integrative Nutrition Health Coach & Functional Medicine Practitioner @The Endearing Project.

Festivals are vibrant events that bring together people from all walks of life to celebrate music, culture and community. While they offer an escape from everyday routines, it's crucial to prioritise your wellbeing during the festivities. We can’t forget about the basic rules that will keep us safe, rain or shine. Here are three tips on how to look after yourself and ensure a positive and uplifting festival experience.

festival ready

Nourish yourself

Staying hydrated is extremely important, especially when you're out at a festival. With all the sun, dancing and walking, you need to drink plenty of water throughout the day to avoid dehydration. Bring a refillable water bottle and take advantage of water stations around the festival grounds. Try to drink at least 2-3 litres of water each day and more if it’s hot or you’re very active. When it comes to food, festivals offer everything from healthy options to indulgent treats. To keep your energy up, focus on eating a balanced diet. Pick meals that give you a good mix of carbs, proteins and fats, such as poke bowls, curries or even a fresh burger with a large side salad. Queues for food outlets can get long or you might skip meals to see your favourite artist, so make sure you pack some pick me up snacks like nuts, fruits and protein bars, keeping them handy to stay energised between meals.

Take time out

Festivals can be exhausting, with activities often running late into the night. Ensure you get adequate rest by setting aside time to relax and recharge. You can try on- site yoga or stretching activities, or even a massage. If you’re camping, bring comfortable bedding and earplugs to help you sleep amidst the noise. Listen to your body and take breaks when needed to avoid becoming overwhelmed or unwell. Stay together as a group and notice when someone needs your help. Festivals can be intense, so taking time out to recharge between activities is crucial to making this experience one filled with good memories.

Protect yourself from the elements

Make sure you're protecting yourself from the sun. Pack your high SPF sunscreen and apply it regularly. Bring a wide-brimmed hat and use sunglasses to protect your eyes. Seek shade whenever possible - especially during peak sun hours between 10 AM and 4 PM- as extended exposure to the sun can lead to sunburns, heat exhaustion, or heatstroke.

On the other hand- depending on which part of the world you're taking part in the festivities, be prepared for rainy days and cold nights. Bring a pair of boots or wellies if necessary. Pack waterproof clothing and stay warm when possible. Once you get cold and wet, it can be very hard to warm back up, especially when sleeping in a tent.

Attending a festival can be a thrilling experience. By prioritising your wellbeing and safety, you can ensure that your time is enjoyable and stress-free. Stay hydrated, eat well, protect yourself from the elements, and get enough rest. By taking these steps, you’ll be well-prepared to enjoy all the excitement that festivals have to offer, while keeping yourself safe and healthy, making unforgettable memories that will last a lifetime. Enjoy!
