Discover how to have a stress-free holiday from Margareta Serfozo, Integrative Nutrition Health Coach & Functional Medicine Practitioner @The Endearing Project.

Holidays are a time to relax, recharge and create lasting memories. However, the anticipation and planning of a perfect holiday can sometimes lead to stress and anxiety. Here are my top tips to help you map out and achieve a truly rejuvenating holiday.

Manage expectations

Achieving a relaxing holiday involves researching your destination to understand the local culture, weather and potential health risks. Think about what type of holiday you would find relaxing and consider the needs of the people you’re traveling with, planning activities accordingly. Create a flexible itinerary that balances activities and relaxation, avoiding over-scheduling to prevent exhaustion. Setting a realistic budget and allocating funds for different aspects of your trip can alleviate financial stress, ensuring peace of mind. Preparation is important as it helps reduce anxiety and sets realistic expectations. Research shows that having better travel experiences can help maintain both your immediate happiness and overall life satisfaction for longer after your return. It's a great way to avoid the post-holiday blues!

Get into a relaxed mindset

Consider a digital detox to disconnect from social media and emails, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in your surroundings. A break from digital devices can reduce anxiety and increase engagement with your environment, among other potential health benefits. Techniques like meditation, deep breathing exercises, and yoga can help keep you present and relaxed. Embrace imperfections and view them as part of the adventure, transforming potential stressors into memorable experiences.

Maintaining health and vitality

Trying local delicacies and cuisine is an integral part of holiday fun. Make sure you choose balanced meals, incorporate fresh local produce and stay hydrated, especially in hot climates or during physical activities. Carry a reusable water bottle for easy access to clean water. Exercise, such as morning jogs, hikes, or swims can boost your mood and energy, so try incorporating those activities when you can. Exploring your destination on foot or by bike can provide a unique experience too. Ensure you get enough rest to recover and recharge during these days. By prioritising these aspects, you can create a holiday that is both enjoyable and restful.

By balancing activities with relaxation, setting realistic expectations and taking care of your mind and body, you can create a holiday experience that is fulfilling and stress-free. Remember, the goal of a holiday is not just to escape daily life but to return feeling refreshed and revitalised.
