Soak away stress: A guide to the perfect relaxing bath

Discover the ways that bathing can help to reduce stress with Margareta Serfozo, Integrative Nutrition Health Coach & Functional Medicine Practitioner.

There’s something undeniably soothing about sinking into a warm bath after a long day. Beyond the immediate comfort, baths have profound benefits for mental and physical well-being. From easing stress to soothing sore muscles, the ritual of a bath can become a cornerstone of self-care. Here are three simple tips to elevate your bath time into a truly relaxing experience.

Rose Petal bath

Harness the power of aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is a complementary therapy that uses essential oils to address various health conditions. Research shows that these oils can be inhaled, applied to the skin, or added to baths and may help with stress, insomnia, headaches and muscle pain. An aromatherapy bath is an indulgent yet practical way to care for your body and mind. With the right oils and a relaxing setup, you can turn an ordinary bath into a restorative ritual for improved well-being.

To stay safe, don’t use essential oils on broken or irritated skin. Be cautious with citrus oils as they can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Always test a small amount on your skin first to check for allergies and mix the oil with a carrier oil or liquid soap before adding it to your bath. Stick to good-quality oils from trusted brands, and if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or have allergies, check with your doctor first.

Revitalise with Epsom salts

Epsom salts are a simple yet powerful addition to any bath. A small study suggests Epsom salt baths may boost magnesium and sulphate levels in the body, with a 2016 study showing that magnesium can penetrate the skin's outer layer. These magnesium-rich crystals may help relax your muscles and ease soreness, making them ideal bath partner after a workout or a day spent on your feet. Magnesium can also play a role in calming the nervous system, which can alleviate stress and improve sleep quality. For a rejuvenating soak, add about two cups of Epsom salts to warm bathwater and stir until dissolved.

Create a serene bath-time ritual

Transforming your bath into a mindful ritual can amplify its benefits. Set the mood by dimming the lights, lighting candles, or playing soft, relaxing music. Keep distractions at bay by leaving your phone in another room, allowing yourself to be fully present. A mindful approach to bathing can help you connect with your body, breathe deeply, and enjoy a rare moment of stillness in your busy day.

A warm bath can be so much more than a hygiene routine—it’s a chance to nurture your body and mind. By incorporating aromatherapy, Epsom salts and a serene atmosphere, you can transform your bath into a haven of relaxation. So next time you feel overwhelmed, take the time to soak away your stress and emerge feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.
